Kanakuk Kampers, families and staffers make substantial impacts on their communities every day. During times of need, we have seen countless Kanakuk family members RiseUp! to serve their communities and transform them for the better.
This week, a group of 60 Kanakuk Institute students and staffers will be traveling to Joplin, MO to work alongside two local organizations, Rebuild Joplin and the Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity , in restoration efforts around the community.
In the wake of last year’s tornado, Kanakuk staff members have looked for opportunities to be proactive in rebuilding efforts. Within weeks of the tornado's initial destruction, 150 staff members from K-Kountry arrived in Joplin to lend a helping hand and clean up the devastating destruction to people's homes. Additionally, this past summer, Kanakuk Kamps partnered with Americans First, an organization that helped train and implement strategic tasks to help staff members figure out the best ways to serve Joplin residents.
This week, Kanakuk Insititute will be working alongside the local organizations in physical rebuilding efforts, such as restoring vinyl siding installations on homes in the Joplin community. Kanakuk Institute students and staffers will also host interactive community events focused on fostering a sense of unity among residents.
We had a chance to chat with Chad Hampsch, Vice President of Operations for Kanakuk Institute, about the goal of the trip. He told us, “The heartbeat of Kanakuk Institute is outreach; we see a need and we try to meet it. We are coming to Joplin to restore not only physical damage, but also to build relational ties with the community.”
Additionally, Scott Clayton, Executive Director for Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity, said, “A key to Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity’s success in the rebuilding effort in Joplin are the partnerships that have developed through our volunteer workdays. We feel blessed to coordinate building efforts and I’m confident that working with the Kanakuk Institute will positively impact our community.”
We are honored to be able to serve Joplin in this way and can't wait to hear great stories of rebuilding, restoration and community growth! Stay tuned for photos from the efforts of the Institute students in Joplin.
