school year has officially started for our Kampers and we’re excited to hear stories
of the impact they are making in their classrooms, on sports teams and at home.
While we absolutely love the summer, being able to see Kampers live out their
faith during the school year is very special to us here at Kanakuk.
truly are “All In” this year and have gained more than just great memories, a
stronger faith and a fun summer. In fact, Kampers can be better students and more
prepared for the school year after spending a summer at Kanakuk. A recent
Huffington Post article
even explained that one of the most valuable things for a child's future is a summer camp experience.
to Collin Sparks, the Executive Director of Kanakuk, “Students who attend
summer camp have the opportunity to develop pivotal skills and confidence apart
from parental supervision that benefit them throughout the school year. Skills
like learning how to lead others, how to step out of their comfort zone in
confidence, and the ability to overcome every day challenges with success are
vital to personal and academic success!”
have seen all of these things ring true for so many Kampers, so today we’re
excited to highlight 5 ways Kanakuk impacts Kampers during the school year:
1. They learn to be leaders
Kamp, it is our mission to build up strong Christian leaders through life
changing experiences, Godly relationships and spiritual training. Kampers have
the opportunity each day to step up and serve those around them. Whether it is
by cleaning the cabin alongside cabin mates or encouraging a friend while they
navigate the “treetops,” Kampers learn the value of leading the way Jesus did.
With an “I’m Third” lifestyle, Kampers show their peers and teachers “God First,
Others Second, I’m Third,” ultimately paving the way for them to experience
other leadership opportunities.
2. Their confidence was built
Kanakuk, we encourage Kampers in every activity and affirm them when we see
their strengths shine. As a result, Kampers leave the summer feeling confident
in themselves and see their worth for how God has created them! (Psalm 139:14) This confidence can impact their study habits, willingness to
volunteer in class and desire to step out of their comfort zone. They can feel
more prepared going into class and enjoying time on the field during recess,
practice and games.
3. They tried new things
the higher confidence level, Kampers often enter the school year willing to try
new things. Taking the honors level math class or joining the band can seem less
daunting because they had the opportunity over the summer to try out over 70
different sports and activities. By trying new things during the school year,
Kampers often find their passions and what God created them for.
4. They were taught diligence
important skill Kamp hones is creating a day-to-day schedule and sticking to
it. While each Kamp differs slightly, Kanakuk helps Kampers form a routine and
be diligent in their schedules and responsibilities. For example, in the mornings,
Kampers participate in “honor cabin” where they work together to do things like
making thier bunks, organizing clothes, sweeping, cleaning, and more. With
personal responsibilities and assignments, Kampers recognize the importance of team
work and follow through. We see Kampers transfer this to diligence in their schoolwork,
practicing for sports and activities, and in their daily faith journey.
5. They experienced how Jesus can
be their guide
the summer, Kampers are poured into and encouraged in knowing Jesus Christ is
their Lord and Savior. As summer ends and the busyness of the school year
begins, they continue to rest in that knowledge and truth. Stress of school and
daily activities can be less stressful for Kampers because they remember that
God is knows what they need. (Matthew 6:30-32)
these are 5 reasons that Kampers see better success during the school year. Of
course, there are
countless other ways that a summer at
Kamp can positively impact students throughout the year!
